Going back to the old Niederrhein dialect, which is closely related to dutch because of the common history, the name Kerken comes from the old churches, which characterized the city. The two main city districts are named Nieukerk (=new church) and Aldekerk (=old church). De city is located in the heart of the Niederrhein and has almos 12.000 inhabitants.
